What is a UK eVisa and Why is Transitioning Mandatory?

Proving your immigration status now requires navigating a fully paperless system. Common transition issues and errors we assist with include:

The Golden Rule: Your digital eVisa must match your physical travel document. You should update your UKVI account immediately if you obtain a new passport, change your contact details, or change your name. Failure to do so can prevent you from boarding flights or passing through UK border control.

2026 Application Deadlines and Requirements

Although physical BRP cards have expired, establishing and maintaining your digital profile remains an ongoing mandatory requirement.

No Government Fee: Setting up a UKVI account and accessing your eVisa is entirely free through the official government portal.
Right to Work and Rent: Employers and landlords no longer accept physical BRP cards. You must be able to log in and generate a secure Share Code online to prove your legal rights.
Travel and Border Crossings: Border authorities and airlines rely on the digital link between your eVisa and travel document. Attempting to travel without a properly linked eVisa can result in boarding denials or significant border delays.

Eligible and Ineligible Categories

Almost all non-UK nationals residing in the UK with long-term immigration permission must transition to the eVisa system.

Eligible: Skilled Workers, Students, Spouses, Family Visa holders, EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) status holders, and Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) holders.
Ineligible: British and Irish citizens do not require an eVisa, although dual nationals should ensure that any non-UK travel documents are correctly updated where applicable.

Processing Times

Setting up a digital account is designed to be swift, but resolving technical anomalies can take time.

Standard Transition: Normally active within hours of successfully submitting your details through the UKVI portal.
Complex Linkages / Error Corrections: If the Home Office records contain discrepancies, submitting a data correction or manually updating a passport link can take 2 to 6 weeks.

Potential Outcomes

Successful Linking: Your digital status is active, verified, and correctly linked to your current passport.
Pending or Verification Required: The Home Office is cross-referencing your historical immigration documents with its records before finalising your digital status.
Discrepancy or Error Flagged: Your digital profile contains incorrect information or visa conditions that require administrative correction.
