Key Requirements
To be successful in your application, you must provide evidence to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) that:
- Purpose of Visit: You are visiting solely to marry, enter a civil partnership, or give formal notice of your intent to do so.
- Age: You are 18 years of age or older.
- Relationship: Your relationship is genuine and not a “sham” or arrangement of convenience.
- Timing: You plan to marry or give notice within 6 months of your arrival.
- Departure: You intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit and will not try to live there through frequent or successive stays.
- Finances: You have sufficient funds to support yourself and pay for your return journey without working or using public funds.
Entry Clearance
You must apply for this visa before you travel to the UK. Even if you are from a country that normally does not require a visa for tourism (a non-visa national), you still need a Marriage Visitor visa if your purpose is to marry. A Standard Visitor visa is not valid for this purpose.
Costs and Validity (2026 Rates)
- Application Fee: The fee for a Marriage Visitor visa is £127.
- Duration: The visa is valid for up to 6 months.
- Entries: It typically allows for multiple entries within that 6-month window, provided the primary purpose remains the same.
Marriage Visitor Visa vs. Fiancé Visa
It is vital to choose the correct route based on your long-term goals:
- Marriage Visitor Visa: Use this if you want to have your ceremony in the UK and then return to your home country. You cannot switch to a residency visa from within the UK on this route.
- Fiancé Visa: Use this if you intend to marry a British citizen or settled person and live together in the UK permanently. This route is more expensive (approximately £1,938) but allows you to apply for a Spouse visa from within the UK after the wedding.
Permitted Activities
While on a Marriage Visitor visa, you can:
- Marry or form a civil partnership at any licensed venue.
- Give formal notice of your marriage at a register office.
- Pass through the UK in transit to another destination.
Prohibited Activities: You are not allowed to work, study (except for very short courses), or receive public benefits (such as healthcare through the NHS, except in emergencies).
