Core Eligibility
To qualify for this visa, you must satisfy the following conditions:
- Nationality: You must be a Commonwealth citizen, a British Overseas citizen, or a citizen of Zimbabwe.
- Age: You must be at least 17 years old on the date you plan to arrive in the UK.
- Ancestry Chain: You must prove that at least one of your grandparents was born:
- In the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man.
- In the Republic of Ireland before March 31, 1922.

- Biological parents and grandparents.
- Legal adoptions (provided the adoption is recognized under UK law).
- Parents or grandparents who were not married at the time of birth.
2026 Costs and Fees
The UK Ancestry visa is granted for a 5-year period. You must pay all application fees and the health surcharge upfront.
| Fee Type | 2026 Rate | Total for 5 Years |
| Visa Application Fee | £682 | £682 |
| Health Surcharge (IHS) | £1,035 per year | £5,175 |
| Total Upfront Cost | — | £5,857 |
- Priority Service: For a faster decision (usually 5 working days), you can pay an additional £500.
- Financial Evidence: While there is no fixed minimum balance, you should typically show enough savings to cover your first few months of housing and living costs. A common benchmark is £1,270, though more is advisable if you have dependants.
Rights and Restrictions
- Work: You can work in any industry at any skill level. There is no minimum salary requirement.
- Study: You are permitted to study alongside your work.
- Dependants: You can bring your partner and children under 18. They will be granted the same 5-year stay.
- No Public Funds: You cannot claim most benefits, such as Universal Credit or Housing Benefit.
Path to Settlement (ILR)
After living in the UK for 5 continuous years, you may be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
- Residence Requirement: You must not have spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period during those 5 years.
- Employment: You must prove you have been working or actively seeking work throughout your stay.
- Integration: You must pass the Life in the UK Test and meet the English Language B1 requirement (speaking and listening).
Important Note: Starting in April 2026, the government is introducing an “Earned Settlement” scheme. While the Ancestry route currently remains a 5-year path, new applicants may be required to show a minimum annual income (proposed at £12,570) to qualify for permanent residency.
