Naturalisation is the legal process that allows a foreign national to become a British citizen. Once successful, you gain full rights in the UK, including the right to vote in all elections, access to a British passport, and the ability to live and work in the UK permanently without any further immigration restrictions.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for naturalisation, you must satisfy several specific criteria regarding your residency, character, and integration into British society.
1. Residency and Immigration Status
The length of time you must have lived in the UK depends on your marital status:
- Standard Route: 5 years of lawful residence. You must have held Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or Settled Status for at least 12 months before you apply.
- Spouse/Civil Partner Route: 3 years of lawful residence. You can apply as soon as you have ILR or Settled Status; there is no 12-month waiting period required.
2. Absence Limits
You must prove that you have not spent too much time outside the UK during your qualifying period.
- Total Absences: No more than 450 days in the last 5 years (or 270 days in the last 3 years if applying as a spouse).
- Final Year: In the 12 months immediately before your application, you must not have spent more than 90 days outside the UK.
- Physical Presence: You must have been physically present in the UK on the exact day 3 or 5 years (depending on your route) before the date the Home Office receives your application.
3. Integration Requirements
- English Language: You must prove your proficiency in English (speaking and listening) to at least CEFR Level B1. This can be done via a Secure English Language Test (SELT) or by having a degree taught in English.
- Life in the UK Test: You must pass this test, which covers British history, values, and government. If you passed this for your ILR application, you do not need to take it again.
- Good Character: The Home Office will check for criminal records, immigration breaches, or unpaid debts to the UK government (such as NHS debts).

The fees for naturalisation were updated in 2025. You should budget for the following costs:

- Children: The fee for “Registering” a child as a British citizen is £1,214.
- Biometrics: There is usually a small fee (approx. £19.20) for enrolling your fingerprints and photo at a UKVCAS center.
The Application Process
- Online Application: Complete the form on the GOV.UK website and pay the fees.
- Biometrics: Attend an appointment to provide your fingerprints and a digital photograph.
- Referees: You must provide two referees who have known you for at least 3 years. One must be a professional (like a teacher or accountant) and the other must be a British citizen over 25.
- Decision: Most applications are processed within 6 months.
- Ceremony: If approved, you will attend a citizenship ceremony at your local council. You will take an oath or affirmation of allegiance to the Monarch and receive your Certificate of Naturalisation.
Important Note on Passports
Once you become a British citizen, your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or digital eVisa status will no longer be valid. You must return your BRP card to the Home Office within 5 working days of your ceremony or face a fine. You can then apply for your first British Passport, which currently costs £82.50 for an online application.
