The 20-Year Long Residence route is designed for individuals who have built a life in the UK over two decades, even if parts of that residence were not “lawful” (i.e., they did not hold a valid visa). This route is governed by Appendix Private Life.

Core Eligibility

To qualify, you must demonstrate the following:

20-Year Threshold: You have lived continuously in the UK for at least 20 years.
Continuous Residence: Your stay must not have been broken by significant absences (more than 6 months at once or 550 days in total over the 20 years).
Location: You must be in the UK when you apply.
Suitability: You must not fall under the “General Grounds for Refusal” (serious criminality, deception in previous applications, or unpaid NHS debts over £500).

The Path to Settlement (10-Year Route)

It is important to understand that 20 years of residence does not grant you immediate permanent residency (ILR). Instead, it places you on a 10-year path to settlement.

Initial Grant: You are granted Permission to Stay for 30 months (2.5 years).
Extensions: You must apply for three further extensions of 30 months each.
Settlement (ILR): After completing 10 years with valid permission on this route, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

2026 Costs and Fees

The financial burden of this route includes the application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) for every 2.5-year period.

Fee Waivers: If you are destitute and cannot afford these fees, you can apply for a Fee Waiver. If successful, both the application fee and the IHS will be waived.

Proving Your 20-Year Residence

Since this route often involves periods without a visa, the Home Office accepts a wide variety of evidence to “bridge the gaps”:

Official Records: Passports, old visas, P60s, and letters from HMRC or the DWP.
Daily Life Evidence: Bank statements, utility bills (even cash receipts), and tenancy agreements.
Health and Education: Medical records from GPs or hospitals, and school or college attendance records.
Community Evidence: Letters from charities, religious organizations, or local community groups confirming your long-term involvement.
Witness Statements: Personal declarations from friends, neighbors, or colleagues who can vouch for your presence in the UK during specific years.

Key Restrictions and Breaks

Prison Time: Time spent in prison does not count toward the 20-year total, but it does not “break” your residence. You simply “pause” the clock while incarcerated and resume it upon release.
Deportation: If you were deported and later returned, your 20-year clock likely reset to zero upon your removal.
Rolling Absences: Under 2026 guidance, the Home Office has moved toward a “rolling 180-day” limit for absences occurring after April 2024, though the 550-day total cap remains relevant for the overall 20-year lookback.

“Significant Obstacles” Alternative

If you have not yet reached 20 years but have lived in the UK for a long time as an adult, you may still qualify for the same 30-month visa if you can prove there are “very significant obstacles” to your integration in your home country (e.g., you no longer speak the language, have no family there, or would face serious social isolation).
