Private Life Route

The Private Life route is intended for individuals who have built a significant life in the UK through long-term residence. Following updates in 2022 and further refinements in 2025/2026, the rules now provide specific pathways for children, young adults, and long-term residents.

UK Private Life Route

Eligibility Categories

To qualify under Appendix Private Life, you must meet one of the following criteria:

Children (Under 18): Must have lived continuously in the UK for at least 7 years. You must also show that it would not be “reasonable” to expect you to leave the UK.
Young Adults (18–24): Must have spent at least half of your life living continuously in the UK.
Adults (Over 18): Must have lived in the UK continuously for more than 20 years. Alternatively, if you have lived here for less than 20 years, you must prove there would be “very significant obstacles” to your integration in your country of return.

2026 Costs and Fees

Costs depend on whether you are applying for “Permission to Stay” (limited leave) or “Settlement” (ILR).

Fee Waivers: If you can prove you are destitute or that paying the fee would harm the welfare of your child, you may be eligible for a full fee waiver for “Permission to Stay” applications. Waivers are rarely granted for settlement.
Priority Service: For a decision within 24 hours, an additional £1,000 “Super Priority” fee applies.

The Path to Settlement (ILR)

The timeline for permanent residency depends on how you first entered the route:

5-Year Route: Available to those who first applied as a child or as a young adult (under the “half-life” rule).
10-Year Route: The standard path for adults who qualified based on 20 years of residence or “significant obstacles.”
Immediate Settlement for UK-Born Children: A child born in the UK who has lived here for 7 continuous years can apply for ILR immediately, bypassing the need for limited leave first.

Key Rules for 2026

Continuous Residence: You must not have been outside the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period. For those on the 10-year route, your total absences over the decade must not exceed 550 days.
Earned Settlement Reform: As of late 2025, the government has introduced “Earned Settlement” criteria. For adults, this includes a mandatory English language requirement at CEFR Level B2 and passing the Life in the UK Test.
Transitioning from other visas: Time spent on a Family Visa (Appendix FM) can usually be combined with time on the Private Life route to meet the settlement timeline, provided you have held a Private Life visa for at least the final year.

Rights of Parents

If a child is granted status based on 7 years of residence, the parents can apply for permission to stay as well. However, parents do not get “immediate settlement.” They are typically placed on a 10-year path to settlement under Appendix FM and must extend their visa every 30 months.
