UK Fiancé Visa
The Fiancé visa is a temporary, 6-month route for individuals who plan to marry or enter a civil partnership with their UK-based partner. Unlike the Spouse visa, this is an “entry-only” route that requires the ceremony to take place within the UK before you can transition to a long-term residency status.
Official UK Government Updates
For accurate and up-to-date information, always refer to the official UK Government source:
Core Eligibility
To qualify, you and your partner must demonstrate the following:
- Sponsor Status: Your partner must be a British or Irish citizen, hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), have EU Settled Status, or hold refugee/humanitarian protection.
- Intent to Marry: You must prove you genuinely plan to marry or form a civil partnership within 6 months of your arrival. Evidence can include booking a venue, hiring a photographer, or formal inquiries at a register office.
- Relationship History: You must have physically met in person and prove your relationship is “genuine and subsisting.”
- No Prohibited Degrees: You cannot be closely related by blood or marriage in a way that violates UK law.
2026 Financial Requirements
The income and savings thresholds for the Fiancé visa are identical to the Spouse visa. You must meet the requirement using your UK partner’s income (and your own only if you are already in the UK on a different visa with work rights).
| Category | 2026 Threshold |
| Minimum Income | £29,000 per year |
| Cash Savings (if no income) | £88,500 |
- How Savings Work: If your partner earns less than £29,000, you can bridge the gap with savings. The formula is:
- Identify your savings total and subtract £16,000.
- Divide the remainder by 2.5.
- Add this result to your annual salary.
- Example: If your partner earns £25,000 (a £4,000 shortfall), you would need £26,000 in savings to qualify ($£4,000 \times 2.5 + £16,000 = £26,000$).
2026 Costs and Timing
The Fiancé visa is one of the more expensive entry routes because you must also pay to switch to a Spouse visa shortly after the wedding.
| Fee Type | 2026 Rate |
| Visa Application Fee | £1,938 |
| Health Surcharge (IHS) | Exempt (for the initial 6 months) |
| English Language Test (A1) | £150 – £200 |
| Priority Processing | £500 (Optional) |
- Important Note: While you save money initially by not paying the IHS, you will be required to pay the full surcharge (approx. £2,587.50) when you switch to the Spouse visa after your wedding.
English Language Requirement
You must prove you can speak and understand English to at least CEFR Level A1.
- Method: Pass an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) in speaking and listening only.
- Tip: If you pass at a higher level (like A2 or B1) now, you can often reuse that certificate for your later extension and settlement applications, saving you the cost of retesting.
Rights and Restrictions
- No Work: You are strictly prohibited from working (paid or unpaid) or being self-employed while on a Fiancé visa.
- No Study: You cannot pursue long-term courses of study.
- No NHS: Because you do not pay the health surcharge, you are not entitled to free NHS care. You should have comprehensive travel or private medical insurance.
- Mandatory Marriage: If you do not marry within 6 months, you must leave the UK or provide exceptional reasons why the ceremony was delayed.
After the Wedding
Once you are married, you do not need to leave the UK. You apply for Further Leave to Remain (FLR-M) to switch to the Spouse visa route. This gives you a 30-month stay, the right to work, and starts your 5-year “clock” toward permanent settlement (ILR).
